USA Triathlon Aligns with Respect in Sport
USA Triathlon has partnered with Respect in Sport to take a proactive role in risk management for coaches and community leaders. Respect in Sport is a risk management and abuse prevention program designed to help the sport by creating a culture of respect, while reducing liability in the sensitive area of abuse.
The Respect in Sport Coach and Leader program is designed as a tool to create awareness and assist coaches in identifying and dealing with abuse, bullying, harassment and neglect in sport and respond to and if necessary, report negative behaviors.
This partnership entails the launch of an online education program for all coaches to help ensure sports are positive and safe for children and youth. The program will be a recertification requirement for all certified coaches starting in 2012.
Age Group Triathlete Testing Deemed a Success
USA Triathlon announced in February the successful culmination of its inaugural anti-doping testing for an age group event at the 2010 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala. This event marked the first time age group athletes were tested in-competition, with the program conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
Competing athletes supported the efforts, praising the program as well-organized and professional, and welcomed the added level of confidence in fair play that testing for performance-enhancing substances can provide. In addition, USA Triathlon is pleased that results returned to tested athletes have all been reported negative for the presence of banned performance-enhancing substances.
“I was really impressed with the attention to detail that was given to the entire process, so that I knew I could have confidence in the integrity of the sample collection,” said Bruce Gennari, 44, of Brentwood, Tenn.

ITU President Marisol Casado Visits USAT Staff
USA Triathlon was honored March 8 by a visit from Marisol Casado, the president of the International Triathlon Union, who took time out of a busy trip to the United States to sit down with the entire USA Triathlon staff.
Casado’s trip marked the first time that the ITU’s president visited the USA Triathlon offices in the 22-year history of the organization. “For me, it is a great honor to be here with you,” Casado said.
Casado was in Colorado Springs to visit with USA Triathlon and United States Olympic Committee leadership, including USA Triathlon CEO Rob Urbach and USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. Melissa Merson, member of the ITU’s Executive Board, and Dragomir Cioroslan, the USOC’s Director of International Strategies accompanied Casado on her visit to USA Triathlon.
