special report 3D broadcasting
Avatar, Tron Legacy, Call of Duty: Black Ops, the Football World Cup, Six Nations Rugby - just some of the triple-A films, games and broadcasting sporting fixtures that have ushered in a new era of 3D entertainment. Over the past 18 months 3D truly has been everywhere. The halls of major technology trade shows like CES and IFA have seen row upon row of 3D TVs be announced. Film studios, game publishers and hardware manufacturers are devising ever more impressive ways for the public to consume 3D media. NVIDIA has been at the forefront of the 3D revolution, its 3D Vision technology providing an easy way to add 3D capability to the home PC providing the richest array of 3D content available, including more than 500 3D games, Blu-ray 3D movies, 3D photos and streaming web video.
The 3D revolution has only just begun
L
ike all new technology, however, 3D will thrive based on the content available. The format has had a sound start in this regard but we’re now entering a key part of the 3D lifecycle where adoption will ramp up aggressively, meaning there has to be content available to satisfy the hungry
consumer! With 3D technology capturing the imagination of a generation that have grown up with not just cinema and TV but also the Internet and mobile phones, immediate access to content, both original and shared is paramount. 3D videographers and photographers have been asking for a way to share
content over the Internet at full quality and high resolution, which until the start of 2011 was simply not possible. Step forward NVIDIA and the creation of
3DVisionLive.com which launched at the start of the year.
3DVisionLive.com is a web community dedicated exclusively to 3D content which enables users to view breathtaking 3D videos and photos when used with a 3D-enabled PC or Notebook (see ‘How to get started’). Users are able to upload, share, rate, and view full-resolution 3D photos, as well as enjoy 3D movies and videos, all via a standard web browser. NVIDIA wants a thriving community on the site, sharing their photos and videos, discussing how to get the best from 3D, the best camera angles, lenses, shots, and placing effects to really wow audiences. The site features an intuitive user interface that runs across NVIDIA consumer sites such as
uk.GeForce.com, and high- performance photo and video management engines powered by Phereo and Fordela.
3DVisionLive has the potential to become the 3D hub for enthusiasts. A grand central station leading you to
