To be the first provider in Switzerland to enable customers to watch TV on all three screens, Swisscom needed a solution that could deliver multi-format, multi-channel, multi-delivery capabilities, while providing unbeatable video quality. It was important to minimise capital expenditure and implement a solution that would integrate with its existing IP headend infrastructure and efficiently scale as the number of subscribers and
concurrent sessions increases. Swisscom also needed to create a comprehensive and flexible service infrastructure that could bring the different Swisscom services - broadcast, web and mobile - together under one simplified Swisscom umbrella, handled by a unified delivery system.
Delivering a radically enhanced viewer experience
Swisscom has deployed Harmonic’s ProStream 4000 real-time multi- screen transcoder, a key component of Harmonic’s MediaPrism Convergence Suite, and NMX Digital Service Manager to power its WebTV and mobileTV service. The ProStream 4000 makes it possible for Swisscom to seamlessly transcode both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) broadcast video content to mobile and Internet formats including Apple HTTP Adaptive streaming, Microsoft Smooth Streaming and 3GPP streaming. Its flexible, software-based all-IP architecture can be easily integrated into an existing IP headend and offers
