story to be trimmed or re-edited to suit the delivery medium. Any stills can be added at this stage, and a suitable thumbnail chosen. That should take just seconds, and then the package is turned over to the technology for processing. MediaFUSE and MediaFUSE FX use the concept of ‘publication points’. These are simple outputs, as defined by the system administrator during the set-up phase. Typically, publication points might include a Flash video version for web browsers, a non- Flash-wrapped version for iPad, and smartphone versions by make, model and mobile network.

There is at least one broadcaster which finds the editing and preparation tools in MediaFUSE so capable that all work passes through it, with the broadcast television news play-out server treated as just another publication point.

As new output formats come along, so their parameters are added to the database to create more publication points. There is no limit to the number of publication points, given sufficient processing power to handle the transcoding and trans-wrapping. Today, typical broadcasters will have eight or 10 publication points.

It is vital that news content and the brand awareness it carries is made available to as many viewers, through as many platforms, as possible.

Once the journalist publishes the story, MediaFUSE automatically initiates processing for all the selected publication points. As well as setting the right video parameters it also puts the still pictures into the best resolution, shuffles the metadata format and sends the right information to the right place at the content distribution network, and adds the pre and post roll bumpers as defined in the format.

That works remarkably well for packaged stories, but broadcasters also want to stream their live programmes. This is in itself a useful service to audiences, but it becomes increasingly useful when it is divided up into stories, which can be searched later. Coverage of a major story in a bulletin might involve an introduction by the news anchor, a pre-recorded video package, a live interview with the reporter at the location, and maybe comments from an expert. The ability to wrap this together as a single, searchable online file allows the broadcaster to deliver something which carries its own distinctive character.

MediaFUSE for Ignite allows you to do this, using a direct link with the iNews or ENPS newsroom computer

system. An Active-X plug-in allows the script and running order to be marked up with start and end tags and additional metadata. At broadcast time the marked up running order is tracked via MOS, allowing the realtime encoding engines in MediaFUSE to package complete stories with frame accuracy.

The encoders allow streams to be made available online or to mobile devices within a few seconds of the story or programme starting. The metadata is delivered to the content distribution system as soon as the story is completed, allowing it to be searched immediately.

Alternatively, there is a live option for MediaFUSE for Ignite which captures the studio output for realtime editing and segmentation. Using the simple user interface, an operator can simply mark in and out points for each story, within the growing file, then tag and send on the story as soon as it is completed. Where operational practice does not allow the script and running order to be tagged, this is a powerful alternative which still allows complete broadcast stories from major bulletins to be published to multiple platforms.
