Your Move Moving to a new loca- tion or downsizing your home is a daunt- ing task, and it’s even harder for seniors who have no family or re-
sources to assist them. In October 2002, the National Association of Senior Move Management (NASMM) was created to support moving and relocation specialists who work specifically with seniors. The organization is made up of professionals who specialize in as-
sisting older adults and their families with the emotional and physi- cal aspects of relocation and/or aging in place, according to Jennifer Pickett, associate executive director. “Our members have backgrounds in social work, health care, project management, technology, and mar- keting,” she says. Although services vary by location, most senior move managers
can assist with the following: • developing an overall move or age-in-place plan; • organizing, sorting, and downsizing; • customizing floor plans; • arranging for the profitable disposal of unwanted items; • interviewing, scheduling, and overseeing movers; • arranging shipment and storage of goods; • packing professionally; • unpacking and setting up at the new location; and • related services such as cleaning, removing trash, shopping, select- ing a realtor, and staging the home for sale. According to the NASMM, 96 percent of clients are downsizing, and the most requested services are unpacking and setting up at the new location, move planning and oversight, sorting in preparation for downsizing, disposal and distribution of remaining items, and cus- tomized floor plans. Cost is based on the services requested, but the average cost to
move is less than $2,500 for a one-bedroom home and up to $4,000 for a two-bedroom home. If a move is in your future, visit
