ulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather’s brief classic novel Death Comes for the Archbishop (Alfred A. Knopf Inc., 1992) originally was pub- lished in 1927. Set in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque, it follows two French
priests, Father Valliant and Father Letour, for 40 years starting in the mid 1800s. Their sprawling diocese covers vast tracts of mountain and desert; the priests ride mules for seemingly endless days, tending their scattered flocks. Cather’s descriptions of the Southwestern landscape create a vivid backdrop for her

story. Various New Mexico sites still have a sense of that open horizon under which Cather’s priests interacted with American Indian tribes, Mexicans, and American settlers (including Col. Kit Carson, who served in the Mexican-American and Civil wars). In historical terms, the Spanish became a presence in the Southwest in the early 1500s, when the conquistadors overwhelmed Mexican forces and began plundering wealth and introducing Christianity to the area. The Spanish, Mexican, and native populations all had their respective heydays over the next 300 years, and today’s Americans began arriv- ing on the scene in the early 1800s.
