NATURAL HAIR SPECIAL GET THE LOOK

Naturally glamorous

N

atural hair is making a comeback, thanks to celebs like Janelle Monae and Shin- gai Shoniwa rocking naturally inspired looks. There are so many different hair textures, from tight coils, to loose

waves, to big curls to consider, it can be hard to figure out which style is for you. Well, NAW is here to bring you three hot looks courtesy of Zateesha Barbour, stylist at the Hair Lounge London.

Words by Afua Adom Zateesha Barbour of the Hair Lounge shows us how to get great looks with natural hair.

QUIFFED TO PERFECTION

Janelle Monae and Shingai Shoniwa have made quiffs cool again! To get the look Zateesha says, “Esther’s tightly coiled Afro hair was blow-dried smooth around the edges only. I applied some Mizani Silk Finishing Gel, £16.95, to keep it smooth and give the style hold. I rough dried her hair in the middle to keep some thickness and parted it from the crown downwards, leaving the top section out. I put a donut in the part- ing lengthways, brushed the hair round it and pinned it down the centre. The top of the hair was then smoothed out with some straighteners, directed backwards but pushed forward for height and pinned.”

BIG CURLS

Big curls are always so glamorous and gorgeous. “The key to great curls is how you wash and dry them,” says Zateesha. “Make sure you use a curl defining shampoo and conditioner, and then dry your hair with a diffuser, as I did with Natalie-Nicole. This will give you big volume without making your curls frizzy. Before drying I went over her hair with Mizani Shimmer Reflects Gel, £12.55, to give her hair some hold. When it was dry, I teased the roots and then went over her hair with a

small-barrelled curling wand to give the curls definition.”
