A

nother New Year? Already? Welcome to the New African Woman 2011. For most of us this is a time for

reflection – on a personal, professional and many other levels. In this first edition of NAW in 2011, we are

truly going beyond beauty, as our coverage will testify – and for a good reason! And we would like to ask you, our valued readers, to make 2011 the year you choose to reflect deeply on why the plight of the majority of African women on the continent still impedes their development, 50 years after independence in many of our countries. It is not our intention to pontificate, but as this edition has gone big on women’s rights and empowerment, we see no harm in throwing out the question: “What role, no matter how small, have we played on a personal level to better the lives of our fellow women? How do our actions help strengthen the African women’s movement?” In the words of the president of the

African Women Development Fund, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi: “Within the women’s movement, any kind of movement for social justice and equality, there are players who are able to function at different levels… As women we are already disadvantaged by the virtual fact that systems and structures are skewed against us. We juggle norms and values all our lives and all the institutions within, be it political, economic, social,

technological and all, but we also build bridges. But there are some of us who have more opportunity than others and can manage to manoeuvre through systems, to improve the situation of women.” Hence as you sit back and delve into

your favourite magazine for discerning women of substance, enjoy the beauty and fashion pages, but most importantly join our Covergirl, DRCongo’s international model and women’s rights champion, Noella Coursaris, and some of Africa’s best female authors, and the empowering women of the AWDF, all featured in this special edition, in showing the world that with justice, equity and respect of women’s rights, the future of Africa is brighter.
