EI AWARD WINNING CASE STUDIES

CASE STUDY: RINGMER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

It is frequently the case that primary education provides a good insight into environmental awareness with many schools providing gardens, wet areas and topics associated with the environment. However it is regrettably also the experience of most children that this is not always continued through their secondary education and very few secondary schools provide a real insight into how the environmental changes which their pupils will have to deal with in adult life can be assessed and coped with.

It is against this background that Ringmer Community College in East Sussex set out to provide its pupils with the knowledge they need to make reasoned judgements about the important environmental issues confronting society at

At the annual Energy Institute (EI) awards, held last November, the EI was delighted to present Ringmer Community College with its Environment Award, sponsored by Air Products, for their project ‘Encouraging environmental sustainability in secondary education’. Receiving the Energy Excellence Award, sponsored by Luther Pendragon was Marks & Spencer (M&S) for their ‘Energy Efficiency Programme’.

large. In doing this the college used various routes encompassing the teaching curriculum, daily activities and management systems. The result saw a culture change that made children and adults alike more aware of their effect on the environment and how all of us can influence change and make a difference by simple changes to our daily activities. The key objectives of the project were

simple: • To encourage staff and pupils to

take a more responsible attitude in their daily work and learning activities.

• To encompass the whole school and not limit the project solely to a group of interested individuals.

• To demonstrate through a range of renewable energy sources that we do not have to be totally dependant on fossil fuels for our everyday energy.

• To manage and reduce resources
