Stormsaver goes the extra 5,000 miles

Five hundred children from one of the driest countries in the world will have the opportunity to learn about sustainable living, thanks to the UK’s leading provider of rainwater harvesting solutions. Stormsaver has pledged to raise £5,000 to support an extensive education programme for children in the Katutura township, located in the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek.

The project, directed by local conservation specialists, Biosphere Expeditions, will teach Katutura children about the importance of sustainable living and the impact on the planet’s biosphere. It will also help them to understand the significance of living in a safe, clean and hygienic way.

“We are delighted to be involved with this project,” said Michael Farnsworth, managing director of Stormsaver. “We believe that young people are our future and so need to educate them about the most efficient and sustainable ways of living, in order to make a real and positive difference to the world’s biosphere. “The Katutura township is situated at the edge of the one the biggest

conservation areas in Namibia. It currently has a

population of over 200,000, high levels of unemployment and poor living conditions. Families live in corrugated steel huts and have little access to electricity and basic sanitation and can be without water for days at a time.

“As the township is based on the edge of the conservation area, habitants can easily enter the area and poach for bush meat, cut down trees for fire wood and even deposit waste – often causing damage to the flora and the local wildlife. This needs to stop. We need to help them understand that there are other, more sustainable, ways to live without damaging the local environment.

“As this is one the world’s driest places, which is continually threatened by severe perennial droughts, water shortages and water stress, we also need to help children and families learn about water collection and effective usage,” added Michael. www.stormsaver.com

Serving up more – for less

As budgets get increasingly squeezed, one commercial kitchen company is proving it is possible to get 25% more for less...

CHR Equipment, based in Lancashire, is proving its ethos of ‘delivering profitable solutions to the UK food service industry’ is a practical truth: as a result, its clients have already achieved savings of at least 25% on the original budget – significant enough to enable further development plans to become reality, with the added benefits of reducing costs sustainably and delivering ‘best value’.

A new CHR kitchen designed and installed at Old Trafford Cricket Ground’ Gold marquee, for example, ‘recycled’ equipment from three kitchens in the club’s old building, saving over £100,000 and eliminating the need to rent a unit;

likewise at St Helen’s College, incorporation by CHR of some £¼m worth of existing equipment into new demonstration kitchens enabled the project management team to secure funding for a second phase of development.

Paul Neville, CHR Equipment Sales Director, elaborates, “It is logical, if equipment is perfectly serviceable, fulfills a role in the new kitchen and meets current hygiene standards, to re-use it. It enables the client to achieve his objective, and attain ‘best value’ practice, and gives the additional benefit of surely being one of the ultimate recycling techniques!” Founded almost 20 years ago, CHR Equipment has grown to become one of the leading commercial kitchen companies, delivering solutions for venues as diverse as local pub’s through Michelin starred restaurants to stadia. It offers a complete package, from design to installation and maintenance, and unlike many similar companies, is independent in all its areas of operation, enabling it to deliver the most practicable, profitable solution, within budget, for each individual project.
