Traka cabinet proves too tough for armed robbers

previous occasions during which thousands of pounds worth of jewellery had been lost. On this occasion, they tried unsuccessfully to break into the Traka cabinet by hitting the door with their guns. After several other attempts, using tools and other weapons, they fled empty-handed and were apprehended by Swiss police a few streets away.

A Traka key cabinet has foiled robbers trying to raid a high-class jewellery store in the Swiss town of Interlaken. The thieves made off empty-handed after several failed attempts to break into the Traka cabinet, which contained keys to the store’s display cases.

The robbers struck at Bijouterie Kirchhofer, which had been raided on two

The store’s previous robberies had prompted the installation of various new security measures, including the Traka cabinet. Traka’s L-series cabinets, like the one installed at Bijouterie Kirchhofer, hold from 10 to 180 keys and can be locking, non-locking or mixed. Systems can be easily upgraded in modules of 10 key positions and extension cabinets can take the number of keys managed by a single system to 540. Cabinets are managed by

the Traka32 software, which runs as an application on any Windows computer. Traka cabinets are robustly manufactured from Zintec steel and are powder coated with either clear polycarbonate or metal doors.

During the robbery, the Traka cabinet sustained only some slight damage to the door frame and had to have its lock replaced, but the store’s owners were delighted at its ability to withstand such a battering. “We’ve been raided twice before and lost thousands of pounds worth of stock,” explained the Store Manager, “But the Traka cabinet was just too strong for the thieves this time. Installing Traka has not only made our key management easier, it’s given us added protection against robbery, which makes it a very good choice indeed!”

New door opens for fingerprint entry for the elderly

Global Bio Tec’s new Flexi door entry system featuring advanced fingerprint reading technology is being successfully demonstrated at the Alvolution Assisted Living Demonstrator house in West Bromwich.

The system reads fingerprints using reliable sensors which can’t be fooled to simplify door entry and give peace of mind for elderly people without the need to remember door entry codes or carry cards and keys. The British developed and manufactured Flexi has also been robustly independently tested against forced entry to win the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Secure By Design accreditation.

Once your fingerprint is registered by an approved administrator at a care home, through the Flexi’s com.pad, all you need do is place your finger on the device which then recognises you and engages the lock mechanism. Turning a handle then opens the door. This keeps possessions and the living space secure without the need of a key, a keycard or access number code. The com.pad can manage the entry control of up to 50 doors.

On most locks, by removing the door handle, anyone can use a flat head

screwdriver or equivalent to turn the lock and open the door. Flexi has a major security advantage from its special declutching technology. If someone removes the handle with a hammer it just will not open, and the front handle is bolted through the door to the rear support plate using ‘nycloc nuts’, which will turn but not unscrew, maintaining the lock’s integrity. This gives peace of mind to any residents who fear that their door could be broken into via the handle and lock mechanism. Alvolution’s Joanne Perry is demonstrating the new secure entry device to healthcare professionals, social care professionals and care home managers. She said, “What excited us about the Flexi is its application for care homes where privacy and security are an issue. The Alvolution Demonstrator has hundreds of healthcare professionals coming to it to try out new technologies; a number have already taken away further information on the Flexi door entry system.”

Flexi biometric door access systems can be easily be retrofitted to existing doors using a simple template and basic tools. They are a stand-alone battery

powered system without the need for additional expensive door controller units and the added cost of an electrician to connect to mains power. As the name suggests this is a simple, cost-effective and secure solution to give more freedom and fewer worries for care home residents.

The biometric lock was the vision of Devi Sohanta, previously Businesswoman of the Year, who saw the potential for it to help elderly care home residents. She got the inspiration to develop the Connective Touch range of biometric door entry solutions from seeing the problems that some care home residents encounter in keeping their rooms private.
