existing disk and storage systems. Amplidata takes a whole new approach to how data is written to disk: using bitspread technology, each data block is split in many sub-blocks and these are in- turn spread over as many disks in the system as possible. As the system only requires a subset of the sub- blocks to restore the original data file, it can survive the failure of multiple disks or even entire storage nodes. The benefits are obvious: a lot less raw storage is required compared to tape systems or RAID-based disk systems, very low power consumption (disks and appliances can power down) and unseen reliability, scalability and availability.
Amplidata provides some other features that make the solution even better for online archives, such as local caching to improve random read and write performance. The system also facilitates

global data access: storage nodes can be located either all in one location or spread out over different locations. Amplidata features the same ease of expanding capacity as for tape systems. Just add more media: disk media come in preinstalled nodes but given the distributed architecture, adding nodes is as easy as adding tape cartridges. Amplidata has active maintenance agents running on all storage nodes to perform out-of-band data verification, integrity checking and maintenance tasks, and
the list goes on.
While Amplidata will not be the last disk storage solution for online archives to enter the market, it exceeds in innovative value. The product responds well to a specific need (accessible archives) and solves an even more specific shortcoming (unreliability of RAID systems), to solve problems that had been solved by tape, but at a dramatically new low cost of ownership.
