Time Objective can be committed and (3) keeping several generations of certified recovery points so that they can not only be used in case of disaster, but also in case a forensic analysis is needed in case of cyber attacks or suspicious activity.

SNS: Specifically, how do the Virtual Sharp products address the very real issue of ensuring business continuity – somewhat different from simply recovering data?

CE: This is addressed by the fact that ReliableDR is orchestrating the DR process at a IT service level, and provides the ability to run certification automata against those

services in the secondary site in a fenced environment that we call a virtual verification container (vVC).

It is not simply a case of replicating data and VM’s, then hoping that the service that they deliver will function correctly; you know that the services that are protected by VirtualSharp can be brought back, and will function as required, in the case of disaster.

SNS: Please could you outline the issues/pain points that the Virtual Sharp products are designed to address?

CE: There are three issues that our customers need help with.

The first is that legacy BC/DR processes are brittle, inaccurate and unpredictable. The second, it is easy to replicate a “logical disaster”, such as a cybertattack, malware or data corruption. The third is that DR testing is infrequent, expensive and hugely disruptive to ongoing projects. Customers are looking for solutions to these three problems.

SNS: Designing BC/DR software solution for the virtual environment without any legacy issues – how much of an advantage does it give you?

CE: We do not have to support an installed base and its maintenance stream. Our focus is the emerging next-generation

Recovery times slashed

Founded in 1879 in San Sebastian, Kutxa is a regional savings bank in Northern Spain with over 21? billion in assets, strong capitalization and liquidity. Kutxa has over 200 branches in Spain and Southern France.

Kutxa’s corporate IT infrastructure includes x86 servers for mission critical systems, for Intranet, e-mail, Microsoft IIS and other open source software. Corporate BCP specifications called for a sharp reduction in IT recovery time, which was previously two days on a limited scope of mission- critical systems. Kutxa’s IT services considered synchronous mirroring but, due to its very high cost, chose instead to leverage virtualisation with asynchronous mirroring to reduce the Recovery

Time

Objectives (RTO) from two days to several hours.

Recovery assurance was a paramount requirement. Kutxa deployed Vmware VI3 with vCenter Site Recovery Manager, and extended its functionality with ReliableDR to schedule snapshots of virtual machines in the recovery site, and to verify their recoverability. The success of the project relied on the orchestration of the virtualisation layer and data replication tools to automate the certification of recovery points.

With ReliableDR, Kutxa reduced the complexity, time and resources needed to recover in case of severe disruptions. RTO was reduced by 75% while the scope of recoverable systems was increased by 50%, and recovery can now be done with two staff instead of six. Copyright © 2010 VirtualSharp Software S.L.
