backup and recovery in both physical and virtual environments?

CE: BC/DR is going to become a really exciting space in the next few years, with a lot of innovation being brought by cloud computing techniques. DR orchestration is a first step and we are already seeing innovative DR-to-cloud and backup-to-cloud offerings. Before we start to see next- generation full solution suites, many aspects related to networking and legal compliance need to be addressed and resolved.

SNS: What products does VirtualSharp offer for the BC/DR space?

CE:

VirtualSharp has

developed a DR orchestrator called ReliableDR that is available in two editions. The flagship Enterprise edition has been designed to assure the recovery mission-critical, stateful IT services that require precise recovery certification of their components.

The Foundation edition assures the recovery of stateless VMs, such as test&dev or desktop environments.

SNS: And why are they different from other offerings – both physical and the other virtual BC/DR products out there?

Virtualisation – early adopter

Santalucia is a Spanish insurance company with a network of 365 agencies, 7.5 million customers and 9,000 employees. Headquartered in Madrid, Santalucia provides home, life, health and accident insurance, as well as a wide portfolio of financial products for investment, pension and retirement plans.

An early adopter of virtualisation, Santalucia has primary (production) and secondary (backup) datacenters. Each has eight x86 farms hosting business critical applications; storage is centralized in each datacenter using Hewlett Packard XP arrays. Using HP XP’s native snapshot and replication capabilities, production virtual machines are hot-copied regularly to the secondary datacenter.

ReliableDR orchestrates the VMware

hypervisors and the HP XP storage arrays. In order to ensure consistency and immediate availability in case of disaster,

ReliableDR verifies that the VMs are configured at the secondary datacenter to reflect the primary site. This is done for over 100 VMs on a daily basis.

For a set of 60 VMs deemed to be mission- critical, ReliableDR runs further recovery point certification jobs every night between midnight and 4am. These jobs create VVCs in the secondary datacenter and bring up all 60 VMs. Upon successful execution and testing of each IT service, the snapshots are certified and cataloged. ReliableDR keeps seven generations of these certified recovery points, providing seven RPOs from 24 hrs to 7 days. DR orchestration takes place from the secondary datacenter, where ReliableDR runs as a virtual machine. The production datacenter is not impacted in any way by the DR orchestration. In case of a disaster, be it the entire primary datacenter or a subset, IT services can be brought up selectively and automatically by ReliableDR.

CE: Because we are the first company that comes to market with the ability to enforce RPOs.

This brings unprecedented peace of mind to our customers, used to having to cross their fingers when attempting to recover from a disaster. We believe that we are truly pioneering a new approach to DR in virtual environments.

Three further differentiators include (1) enforcing individual recovery point objectives for each IT service (2) measuring and tracking the recovery time to ensure that the Recovery
