FROM THE EDITOR Fitting Facts

“ W

hy is it so important to get my children’s feet measured? Surely, if they try a shoe on and it’s comfy, that’ll do?” In this edition, we pose this often asked question to expert Laura West, Secretary of The Society of Shoe Fitters, a ‘not-

for-profit’ organisation since 1959 www.shoefitters-uk.org. There are now more than 11,000 Chiropodists/Podiatrists in the UK and they are seeing a larger number of younger patients than ever before – why? With the help of Laura West, Footwear Today attempts to provide you some answers and all the facts on fitting. Read more on page 26. Supposing the job you do every day, requires you to be on your

feet much of the time, possibly working in tough conditions, on slippery surfaces or uneven terrain, how do you choose your footwear? Slips and trips in the workplace were the cause of over 10,000 accidents during 2008/9 and a third of all reported major injuries. These accidents not only cause suffering to the victim through pain, days off work and possible permanent disability, but they also cost the health service around £133m per year. Such accidents are preventable through the correct specification and wearing of safety footwear. But, can safety footwear be comfortable and effective? We talk to Arco, the UK’s largest distributor of safety footwear. Don’t miss Fashion Trends, our exciting new section produced in

association with leading fashion trend analysis company WGSN. This month we bring you a taste of Autumn/Winter 2012. And, talking about fashion, check out our selection of the latest ladies formal shoes & bags in Editor’s Choice on page 14. We also bring you previews of major footwear events including GDS in Düsseldorf, Chic in Coventry, and Blackpool. Finally, our intrepid footwear reporter Joan Colett takes the high

road to Scotland to test her Meindl Kansas Ladies GTX boots. When a girlfriend suggested she go away on a “girls activity weekend” in Scotland, Joan thought it a great opportunity to test a new pair of boots. A hike the next day took her through moorland and forest, over rocky outcrops, across burns and brooks and sheep filled meadows. When she got back to the house she had to remind myself that she was wearing new boots, so comfortable were they that she had quite forgotten she was breaking in new footwear! And, considering the different terrains she had traversed – the pine path and the rugged heath - she had come off very well indeed.
