MODULAR MADAM Women’s trend direction, Autumn/Winter 2011/12 Jacqui Ma, WGSN

Modular Madam is the footwear

interpretation of WGSN’s macro trend Your Space. Within this trend there is a refocusing on strong basic shapes and clean lines. Compartmentalised and reworked parts create the illusion of weightlessness. Women’s footwear takes on a strong identity and a bold look. Shoes are modular, made up of separate composite parts and carefully connected together to create an oddly hybrid whole. Colour blocking is important and carefully considered. Focus falls on seams, the construction of heels and removable parts.

Inspiration for this footwear trend is largely

taken from kinetic art - a movement that came out of the desire for artists to capture movement, showing critical balance and overcoming the static nature of art. From the kinetic art movement emerged modular art, which is largely informed by architecture and product design. Fendi’s block-soled sandals illustrate this concept where the shape is created through the combining of different uniform parts to form a whole. This highly modular approach gives the illusion that the elements can be moved or removed to create a new form or image. Versace’s colourful collection from Spring/Summer 2010 introduced the notion of separate parts being combined like building blocks, a sort of highly curated paint by numbers approach to shoe

construction. These styles combined highly feminine elements with an exaggerated chunky platform giving the girly summer upper a bold, futuristic twist.

MULTI-STACKED WEDGE Stacked multi-section wedge with removable soft leather ankle detail and multiple wrapping slim ankle strap. The concept of multi-section heel is key to this trend as is the idea of removable parts. As seen in the 12:61 Autumn/Winter 2010/11 collection from the Tranoi Femme tradeshow.

EXOTIC PLATFORM LOAFER Modular stacked multi-coloured platform loafer with exotic leather heel cup and extended sole wrapping ‘Penny’ tab. This can be seen in the Versace, Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The sturdy heel construction balances the aesthetics of functionality with the playfulness of the shoe’s modular construction.

STRAPPED POWER LOAFER Striped stack-heel loafer in large tumbled grain leather featuring a removable multiple buckle ankle strap attachment in a tonal colour. The Balenciaga Autumn/Winter 2010- 2011 collection shows a highly modular collection where heels look as though they are made from Lego and the uppers have been constructed like a hand-made collage. The strapped power loafer is a move on from this concept where detachable parts have a more seamless presence.
