World:
Dead Island takes place on, well, an island. Banoi is a lush, rich world that is
beautifully rendered and smooth, with tons of detail and relatively smooth transitions between areas. You start off at the 5 star “Sandals” type resort, which includes beaches, swim up bars, pools, fancy bun- galows, and hotels. As you move further along in the story, you get to experience the rest of the island, and the changes in scenery are exceptional and varied, even though this all takes place on one island. The run down city was my favorite area, and the jungle always had me worried as I never knew when an infected would run out of the trees with an ambush. Your weapons are real world items that are just lying around: machetes, hatchets, crowbars, boat paddles, etc. Exploring and looting really good items when you are higher levels are, in my opinion, the best part about the game. If you liked the looting in Borderlands, then this is a game you might want to consider.
My Review:
If you liked Borderlands, Fallout 3, or any RPG for that matter, I couldn’t rec- ommend this game enough. With the exception of some minor bugs (which I expect they will patch eventually), this game get a 9 out of 10.
Character Development:
Each character has a unique style and skill-tree, and how you play is entirely up to you. I started the game with the Asian chick, who is a blades expert. I’m not sure if that’s racist, or simply true that every Asian person is a ninja, but she’s my favorite to play with regardless. Sam B is a blunt-weapons expert, and turning a crowbar into an electrified wand of death is a big bucket of win. I wouldn’t recommend Logan (who’s skill set centers around throwing your items) until you have a good grip (pun intended) on the controls. Like I said earlier, missing a zombie and throwing your best weapon out into the ocean is frustrating.
Multiplayer:
Nobody wants to face the end of the world alone, and playing Dead Island is no exception. Although there is no split-screen to play 2 player, you CAN go online with up to 3 other people. Moving as a group with the same peo- ple throughout the entire game is a bonding experience, and is very accessible. Although sometimes you get paired up with a dumbass, and that‘s frustrating, that’s not the game’s fault. Seeing someone run up to a group of 5 zombies and dying in an embarrassing fashion makes me face-palm every time, and I recommend avoiding these players when you see them.
