Mota Game review by Ryan Germain

A

merica’s entertainment industry has been over-saturated with zombies in the last couple of years. From big-budget movies like “28 Days

Later,” TV shows like “The Walking Dead,” video games like “Left 4 Dead,” and hundreds of comic books and novels, it would seem like another zombie video game would get lost in the mix. However, Techland’s open-world MMO does something no other title has done before: let you openly explore a world taken over by an undead virus. And, I might add, it does it WELL. If you love the genre as much as I do, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.

Story and Concept: 26

In a word, generic. At this point, it‘s hard to come up with a creative, new approach to a zombie story. The quests are typical and expected; going on a supply run, saving a family member trapped in a building, turning the power back on, etc. HOWEVER, actually being able to walk around and try to survive through the apocalypse is a crazy, new experience. You wake up after a night of partying as one of four main characters, who each have a varied skill set which can be tweaked to your preference as you gain levels. Like most RPGs, it takes awhile to really get into your character, but once you do, you’ll have tons of fun slash- ing off limbs with an electrified machete or breaking in skulls with a flaming baseball bat.

On that note, Dead Island’s combat system is unique: guns are rare, and unless your character specifically has upgrades to use them efficiently, you will be melee-ing your way through crowds of zombies. I actually found this more fun, as guns and ammo would be scarce in a real zombie situation. Maintaining your favorite cleaver is essential, and finding a baseball bat on the ground seems more reasonable to me than finding an automatic rifle or shotgun just lying around. After learning the basic controls, cutting off heads and breaking legs with the precision of a surgeon is fun as hell, and very accurate. There are no frustrating bugs that I found with the controls, other than accidentally throwing your kitchen knife out into the ocean every once in awhile.
