t was almost too warm at the 124th anniversary celebration of the Statue of Liberty, October 28, 2010. Not having been on the island for the ceremony in three years made the beautiful weather all the more welcome for members of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. “Isn’t this weather wonderful?” National President Cortina Barnes, of Washington, D.C., asked the audience. Blue skies and a light breeze surrounded Liberty Island where the 151-foot statue stands, holding out her torch, beckoning those tired and huddled masses to our shores.
