The LAMDA Short Courses
Theatre Lighting (Two Weeks – Late July to Early August)
The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to stage lighting within repertory theatre: to develop students’ knowledge of basic skills and to improve their confidence in this field.
The course is for students with or without experience, who wish to learn more about the technical and practical aspects of theatre lighting.
Working in a group of no more than eight, students take classes in:
Theatrical Lighting Equipment Technical Aspects of Stage Lighting Introduction to the Principles of Lighting Design
A variety of styles and methods of presentation are covered, including unit set, multi-set, musicals and opera.
Students learn how to implement a plot for selected aspects of lighting (cyclorama lighting effects, tonal lighting, moving lights etc).
The course culminates in a performance piece in which all students undertake the roles of the lighting department.
The course includes a backstage visit to a West End theatre.
Introduction to Acting for Camera (Two Weeks – August)
This course aims to introduce students to the basic skills and techniques employed when acting for camera and to explore the similarities and differences between live and recorded performance.
The course is for people who have some acting experience, but who may never have worked on camera. It gives students the opportunity to:
Work one-to-one and in small groups with a professional director; Learn how to read and interpret a screenplay for television or film and to develop a believable character on screen;
Understand and practice continuity techniques; Devise material for screen and see how it looks from the other side of the camera; and Develop confidence on screen through learning the ability to watch themselves and others on monitor.
The course also covers the actor’s relationship to post-production elements of film-making (e.g. editing and sound), master classes and talks by professional practitioners.
There is the opportunity to watch and discuss key examples of film and television drama throughout the course.
The course culminates in a showing of the best of the students’ own work, though please note that no recorded material is made available to students for use outside LAMDA.
Physical Theatre (Two Weeks – August)
This is an intensive two-week course with two of LAMDA’s principal Physical Theatre practitioners.
The course is a demanding and rewarding training for student actors exploring this work for the first time or professionals who want to refresh their skills. The course is in two complementary strands.
In an intensive series of mask workshops, students concentrate on building a character through purely physical and emotional response. This is a chance to unlock a creative stimulus and reach the natural imaginative flow essential to the work of the modern actor.
The other half of the course is an equally intensive and rigorous exploration of another Physical Theatre discipline: either physical ensemble and chorus, clowning or commedia dell’arte. This work relates directly to the mask improvisation.
