Two Year Stage Management & Technical Theatre Course

The course is of six terms duration and covers all aspects of stage management and technical theatre. Core training follows student development through from basic lectures to production work. Training with practising directors and designers, students have the opportunity to learn in a professional environment and meet people who are currently active within the business. All students have at least one work placement with a professional theatre, production company or equivalent in the second year of their course.

The theatre spaces that LAMDA uses for public productions are well-equipped and provide the flexibility of proscenium arch, theatre-in- the-round or thrust stage formats. In addition, the Academy has its own wardrobe, scenic workshops and sound studios.

First year students develop core skills in stage management and technical theatre through classwork and then on public performances. Students are assessed primarily on the practical work undertaken.

Second year students work in ‘Head of Department’ roles on public shows. This enables them to broaden their knowledge and gain experience in teamwork and leadership.

Areas such as organisation, scheduling, time management and initiative are emphasised. These skills allow students to develop, understand and manage their own strengths and stress levels. Students are taught how to work within a group, as well as how to manage a team. These are transferable skills that every student will use to their advantage in the entertainment industry, as well as in many other professional fields.

Lectures and practical experience are provided in:

Stage Management Health and Safety

Prop Making and Sourcing Stagecraft

Stage Lighting and Electrics Theatre Sound Scenic Construction Rigging Technical Drawing Scene Painting Set Design Model Making First Aid Fire Safety

AutoCAD & WYSIWYG Tax & Professional Development

These are supported by visits to theatres, museums and technical services companies.

Computers, theatre-related software and internet access are installed and available for student use.

LAMDA maintains close contact with the industry to ensure that the course continues to offer the level of training required. The Academy’s excellent employment record shows that its stage management and technical theatre students are in demand. LAMDA estimates that all students who actively seek employment will find relevant work within a few weeks of graduating from this course. The Academy continues to support students, not just to secure their first job but to ensure they continue in employment.

The prospective stage management/technical theatre student must have a great enthusiasm for the theatre and its technical crafts. S/he must have experience in school, amateur or professional productions and some basic knowledge of stage management and technical theatre.

The course is a deliberately tough training, which endeavours to emulate the procedures of the industry. It is only suitable for those who are fit, enthusiastic and committed to work in the theatre and its related fields.

Admission is by interview.
