Sourcing ELECTRONICS AreOCMs dOing their bit?

With counterfeit and substandard devices proliferating, Rebound Electronics asks where are the original component manufacturers?

In the supply chain cycle, towhomhas the responsibility fallen for detecting counterfeit devices prior to use in application – the supplier, seller, end-user, or government agencies? The answer is that all parties have a role in controlling this global epidemic.

Where, then, do componentmanufacturers (OCM) come into

this? Can they, should they and are they providing resources to stem the flowof clone products?

Manufacturing supply chains

have grownmore sophisticated and complex over the past two decadeswith increased use of subcontractors and suppliers for critical processes andmaterials. Electronic components have not been immune to this evolution. Contractors and suppliers produce and slicewafers and assemble, package, test, andmark components. This is smart business – it provides OCMswith flexibility, reduced overheads and faster times tomarket.

On the flip side, however, they

have lost somemeasure of traceability and product control.

Some OCMare proving helpful

by responding to requests for validation of lot codes and die masks. Most, however, are not. Dice are frequently unmarked, or contain a coding sequence known only to the OCM.

Before condemning OCMs

though, bear inmind that it is absolutely necessary for OCMs to keep some information proprietary. Otherwise counterfeiters can utilise that information tomake their products harder to detect and even functionally closer to the original.

Where does this leave those

purchasing components fromnon- franchised channels? Partners that have proven sources of supplywith solid quality controlmeasures have become increasingly important. Companies adopting strategies like the hybridmodelwork closelywith independent test and quality control labs to verify the integrity of their supply chains.

As a buyer, communicatingwith your supply chain partners is a

necessity. Youmay have the information on file necessary to validate product authenticity and functionality.
