NEWS IN BRIEF

Home grown GaAs RFMicro Devices has announced it has added galliumarsenide (GaAs) technology to its foundry services portfolio andwill begin providing a full suite of GaAs pseudomorphic high electronmobility transistor (pHEMT) technologies to customers of its Foundry Services business unit. All the process technologies are manufactured in Europe. Specifically, RFMDwill make available three distinct GaAs pHEMT technologies optimised for high power, lownoise and RF switching products.

Toshiba drives automotive design with a new motor pre-driver IC

Toshiba Electronics Europe has expanded its range of integratedmotor pre-driver ICs with the TB9067FNG, optimised for BLDCmotors with Hall-effect position sensing.

Exploiting BiCMOS technology, the device integratesmajor functions such as three-

PPAP documentation requirements, the TB9067FNG satisfies automotive-industry requirements. It is ideal for brushed-motor replacement in pumping ormotion-control applications. Its selectablemodes and support for various input and output signal types also allow use as a slave in systems where onemicrocontroller is required to controlmultiplemotors.

Visitors to the EBV Elektronik website will find an audio podcast featuring topics fromthe semiconductor industry. The first two EBVpod episodes cover the fundamentals of RFID technology and its application and example of applied lighting technology in ‘Torre Agbar – LEDs Light Up Barcelona.’ EBVpod episodes will be released every two weeks.

Hot industry topics on the go Director communications at EBV

Elektronik, Bernd Schlemmer, explained: “The EBVpod is not an advertising podcast, but an audio magazine created to entertain. Semiconductor topics are exciting and inspiring.

Norwegianmicrocontrollers head east

Norwegian microcontroller specialist, EnergyMicro, has appointed Omniscient Electronics as an approved distributor in India. The agreement sees Omniscient providing local support for Energy’s complete family of EFM32 Gecko low powerMCUs, based on the ARMCortexM3 processor core. Omniscient is headquartered in Bangalore, with branches in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Secunderabad.

Omniscient director, TV Deshikan, said: “The technology

leadership position EnergyMicro has taken on ultra low power MCUs and the speed with which it is extending its product line, makes them an exciting business partner to work with.”

EnergyMicro’s VP sales APAC, Bryan Hung, added: “There is no

doubting the important role India is taking, and will take in the future, in the global electronics industry and it’s important for us to find a distributor partner with the right mix of geographic reach and technical competence to support the broadest possible range of energy sensitive applications. We look forward to working with Omniscient.”

EnergyMicro’s EFM32 Gecko microcontroller family claims to

consume a fraction of the energy required by other eight, 16 and 32-bit microcontroller solutions. The EFM32 Gecko microcontroller is in full production and details of the software and pin-compatible Tiny Gecko and Giant Gecko products have also been announced. Gecko microcontrollers are supported by the energyAware tool suite and a community of suppliers providing IDE/compilers, debug systems, development kits and real time operating systems.
