From the Editor The Board

When a colleague mentions to you that their board of directors has met and made a key decision, what image comes to mind? Is it the picture of a mysterious group of outsiders arriving in limos and dressed in black suits, huddling around their cherry wood conference table in their special board room? You probably question why you never see these board members on the shop floor and you wonder if they really discuss anything other than their golf game. If this is what you envision, you

probably aren’t alone. And, until I served on the operating committee at a large publicly traded metalcasting company, I felt the same way. But through that experience, I learned that the role of a board is guidance and direction, and to be a set of eyes from the outside with a different perspective. We used the group as a sounding board for new ideas, as a resource to learn about the latest technology trends and to secure input from experts outside our knowledge sphere to help shape our company’s direction. the publication hinged on the quality of these accepted and published works, thus the process of peer review was critical. Prof. Carl Loper of the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison passed away this past September. The Fall 2009 edition of the IJMC was dedicated to the Prof. Loper Cast Iron Symposium and my editorial in that issue, “My Mentor,” discussed the importance and role of mentoring. Carl was more than a teacher, a researcher and a lecturer. To those that had the pleasure to work with him, he was our mentor. His guidance, advice, sly smile and Norwegian humor will be missed, but his legacy will continue on. Thank you Carl. If you consider an advisory board as

your firm’s mentor, it can provide you with a fresh perspective and guidance to lead your organization forward. We all require advice from time to time. Why not take it from a group of leaders who have your best interests at heart.
