emulated elsewhere in the world but the UK is leading the pack at over 13% now, and growing. This trend is bound to continue as more models, lenses and accessories join the party.
"The latest hints from Japan are
that the technology is very close to matching SLRs in terms of viewfinder and autofocus performance, which was previously not a strongpoint. As soon as they're equal in quality or better, the trend towards mirrorless cameras is going to accelerate even more, presumably first in Japan but by the looks of it with the UK following closely behind.
"The objective in these
innovations is to bring more consumers into the enthusiast market. If the retailer can take every consumer who enjoys using their compact camera and wants to achieve great photographic results and put a Micro Four Thirds camera into their hands, they can show them that DSLR quality imaging, the freedom which comes with interchangeable lenses and more creative and artistic possibilities need not come at the expense of convenience. They can have a small, light, stylish camera which they can hang round their neck or slip into a handbag; they can make a fashion statement and they can take great photos.
"It's a whole new market,"
concludes Mark, "and one which is coming on leaps and bounds. It's very exciting for us, for consumers and of course for retailers, especially in the UK who seem to be putting all their strength behind this format!"
They're clearly going to be a big part of the future of digital photography, and have beenwillingly embraced by the UK's photographic consumers
