The ability to upload

photographs to one’s computer or photo-sharing sites without the hassle of plugging in and manually uploading was the natural evolution of these foundations that had been laid. Further developments have been seen in the ability to geo-tag photos, upload via hotspots, upload RAW files and conduct ad hoc transfers, and more are set to come.

Many consumer technologies are now pointing towards the ‘connected home’ as the future of technology and media. Photography (including videography) will undoubtedly play a part in this too. Gone are the early days of DSLRs when people took reams

TheWireless Image Transfer Market By Simon Faulkner, EMEA business director, Eye-Fi

For years, camera and photography technology seemed to crawl along, barely showing signs of improvement between the 1970s and 1980s.And though the first digital SLR camera was launched in 1991, it wasn’t until 1999 that a model came out which really shook things up and started to replace film cameras.

Since then, the market has

changed dramatically – from the cameras themselves, to the format of the photos, to editing and sharing. With this in mind, it is little wonder that the next logical step is wireless SD cards.

Wireless image transfer is the

ability to wirelessly upload photos and videos to your computer or photo sharing sites without the need for cables. This can be done whenever your camera is within range of your homeWi-Fi network or a hotspot which you have a subscription to.

The benefits of this technology vary

from user to user – some enjoy the convenience of being able to switch on their camera when they get home and allowing it to do the work for them, professionals often appreciate the ‘endless memory’ it can provide by enabling them to shoot and continuously upload photos, deleting them from the card as they go.And then there are those social braggers

who constantly want to update their friends/followers via various social media sites.

Wireless SD cards have been on

the market for five years and were invented to answer an obvious need. With the market dominance of digital cameras, the volume of photographs that people were taking rose dramatically. At the same time, wireless networks within the home became more commonplace, with many homes usingWi-Fi to connect to the internet. And finally, social networking became the new drug of choice for young and old (but especially the young) alike.

of photos, never to print them. Photo sharing goes beyond hard copy now and will continue to do so. Consumers want to view photos on every device they have – smartphones, tablets, TVs – so wireless services will play a large part in enabling this.

For the foreseeable future, this

market is not set to slow down. The possibilities that wireless SD card technology can bring are many and varied. As most major camera manufacturers have started including a function for wireless SD cards in their products, it is a strong sign that they accept that incorporating such technology into the cameras themselves is not viable and they are nailing their colours to the mast of the technology that they believe will dominate for the immediate future. One can only guess at where the industry will be in the next ten years!
