Tour the homes where other Washingtons slept

The tour is presented by by Megan Buerger

Between the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, 70 miles from George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, lies a collection of lesser-known homes with ties to the first president. Washington and his family owned 10 manors in Jefferson County, W.Va., seven of which are still standing. On Saturday, the third annual Washington Family Homes Tour opens the doors to four of these estates. There will be docent-led tours of the Georgian-style Harewood, the 1770 home of George’s oldest brother, Samuel; Beallair, the 1790s Classical Revival home of his great-grandnephew Lewis Washington; Claymont, the 1840 Georgian mansion built by the former president’s grandnephew Bushrod Corbin Washington; and Charles Washington’s Happy Retreat Estate & Gardens, the 1780 Classical Revival home of the youngest Washington brother and founder of Charles Town, W.Va.

Friends of Happy Retreat, a nonprofit organization that will put proceeds from the event toward the purchase, operation and restoration of the Charles Washington estate, where he and his wife, Mildred, are buried. Walter Washington, a direct descendant of Samuel Washington and the Harewood manor’s current owner and occupant, is one of the group’s founding members. This is the first year that

Claymont, owned by the Claymont Society for Continuous Education, is participating in the tour. Beallair is owned by the Wormold Cos., and Happy Retreat is occupied by John Gavin, whose family bought the property in 1968. “Most people think the

Washington family’s history begins and ends with Mount Vernon,” said Laura Longley, the development communications consultant for Friends of Happy Retreat, “when actually, the major homestead area is Jefferson County.”
