Man allegedly shifted funds to Times Square plotter BY JERRYMARKON A New York man unwittingly
transferred thousands of dollars from the Pakistani Taliban to fund May’s failed Times Square bombing, authorities said Wednesday. Mohammad Younis, 44, was
indicted on charges of operating an unlicensed money transfer business known as a hawala, an informal network popular in South Asia and the Middle East. HewasarrestedWednesday at his home in Long Island, N.Y., by agents of the FBI-led JointTerror- ism Task Force. Court documents say that in
“
April, Younis met with Faisal Shahzad, who pleaded guilty in the attempt to detonate an explo- sives-packed Nissan Pathfinder on May 1 at one of New York’s busiest intersections. The failed attack dramatized what the U.S. government calls the growing threat of homegrown terrorism. Federal officials said Younis
provided Shahzad with thou- sands of dollars for the bombing at the direction of a co-conspira- tor in Pakistan. They did not identify the co-conspirator but noted that Shahzad said at his plea hearing in June that the April cash payment had been arranged in Pakistan by Taliban associates. The indictment of
Shahzad said he received $12,000 from the Pakistani Taliban to car- ry out the plot. Younis pleaded not guilty at his
arraignment inManhattan feder- al courtWednesday on charges of conducting an unlicensed mon- ey-transmitting business and conspiring to do so.He facesupto 10 years in prison if convicted. A lawyer for Younis could not be located. Preet Bharara, the U.S. attor-
ney in Manhattan, said Younis “unwittingly funded a terror plot that, if successful, would have caused mass casualties in New York City.” Janice K. Fedarcyk, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s

New York office, said the bureau “will leave no stone unturned” in its investigation of Shahzad’s ac- tivities and other terrorist plots. The U.S. government this
month designated the Pakistani Taliban a terrorist group and charged its leader with involve- ment in a December suicide bombing that killed seven Ameri- cans at a CIA operating base in Afghanistan. The moves marked an effort to heighten the campaign against the militant group — which has expanded its operations to in- clude attacks against the United States — beyond CIA drone strikes and other lethal means.

T
he mood in Boehner Land is anxious. OnWednesday
morning, Speaker-in-Waiting John Boehner held his first CapitolHill news conference since election handicappers began to predict with high confidence a GOP takeover of the House. The Ohio Republican was a bundle of nervous energy. He let out an audible “oooh”
when he sawthe crowd awaiting him in the television studio. He licked his lips, checked his jacket button and rolled his shoulders back. During his brief time on the podium, the topHouse Republican checked the same jacket button no fewer than nine times and executed several additional lip licks and shoulder rolls. The questioning of Boehner
began at 10:27 a.m. Forty-three seconds later, a Republican leadership aide,Matt Lloyd, tried to put an end to it. “Last question!” he shouted. Reporters only laughed at the
young man. “Good try, boys,” Boehner said to the staff. It’s not surprising that Boehner, and those around him,
DANA MILBANK Washington Sketch
are uneasy. Expectations are that he’ll receive the speaker’s gavel fromNancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in January—unless he screws up. And Democrats are only too
happy to facilitate said screw-up. They’ve launched a relentless campaign portraying him as a cartoon-character plutocrat and a “friend of lobbyists everywhere.” A newDemocratic Party ad shows a gated “Boehner Land” amusement park (“get in the door for $37,000”). His loyal Republican lieutenants, meanwhile, are sending signals that they wouldn’t mind if Boehner stumbled. A newbook, “Young Guns,” by three of them makes only passing reference to Boehner and contains a foreword (by theWeekly
Standard’s Fred Barnes) speculating about one of the authors, Rep. Eric Cantor (Va.), assuming the speakership. The minority leader has
already tripped up under the pressure. In a dismal performance on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, he was flummoxed when host Bob Schieffer questioned him about his smoking, and he incautiously said he would be willing to abandon the continuation of GeorgeW. Bush’s tax cut for the wealthy. His loyal lieutenants let it be
known that Boehner wasn’t speaking for them, and the speaker-in-waiting delivered a recantation at his news conferenceWednesday. “Do you still stand by what
you said Sunday?” “I said Sunday about five
times that I want to extend all of the current tax rates,” Boehner said.
But what if giving up the tax
cut for the wealthy “is your only option, as you said Sunday?” “I want to extend all of the
current tax rates,” Boehner replied. It was then that the aide
tried to cut off questioning, to no avail.
“Speaker Boehner!” Gannett
News’sMalia Rulon called out cheekily. “Oops,my bad.” The congressman stifled a grin as Rulon continued: “What do you think about, one, you becoming speaker? . . . And number two, what do you think about all these people talking about this?” Boehner already looked the
part of speaker: polished tassel loafers and perfectly tailored suit, a quarter-inch of white cuff revealed at the wrist. But he wasn’t ready to talk about it. “Well, I think it’s all a bit premature,” he demurred. He gave curt answers to a few
more questions before turning to leave. “Wait!” theHill newspaper’s
MollyHooper called after him. “The DNC is really targeting you with ads, and I’mwondering . . .” “Oh,Molly, God bless you,” Boehner said, still walking away. “It was a softball, dude!”
Hooper protested. Sorry. In Boehner Land, even
softballs will be regarded with suspicion until Election Day.
