David Dortort ‘BONANZA’ PRODUCER

David Dortort, 93, who pro- duced “Bonanza,” “The High Chaparral” and other TV West- erns, died Sept. 5 at his home in West Los Angeles. No cause of death was reported.

“Bonanza” starred Lorne Green as the patriarch of a family that lived on the Ponderosa ranch in Nevada. The show was the first prime-time Western to be broad- cast in color at its debut in 1959. It ran 14 seasons and became one of the highest-rated shows on television. Mr. Dortort also was executive producer of “The High Chapar- ral,” which ran from 1967 to 1971; the 1979 miniseries “The Chi- solms”; and several later “Bonan- za” TV movies.

Glenn Shadix ‘BEETLEJUICE’ ACTOR

Glenn Shadix, 58, best remem- bered for his portrayal of a portly,

pretentious designer in the com- edy “Beetlejuice,” died Sept. 7 at his home in Birmingham, Ala. A cause of death was not imme-

Director Tim Burton cast Mr. Shadix in films including “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Planet of the Apes” and “Bee- tlejuice,” the 1988 horror comedy for which he is perhaps most widely remembered. In the film, Mr. Shadix starred opposite Winona Ryder and Mi- chael Keaton as Otho, a snooty in- terior designer who tries his hand at the occult to summon ghosts from the afterlife. Mr. Shadix’s Web site also de- scribes him as a photographer and gay rights activist; he spoke publicly about undergoing so- called ex-gay therapy as a teen- ager.
