He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America since 1975 and served as a former Philadelphia Region Executive, SCCA Board of Directors and Chairman of the Pro Racing Board.

Cherie's character was a beautiful blend of emotion, intellect and compassion of which she made use and shared the ben- efits. As a respiratory therapist she gave comfort to her patients while fulfilling her love of science. She mastered the heirloom, tomato - using them in her spicy ethnic recipes. Cherie enjoyed photogra- phy and was an excellent artist, sketch- ing near perfect portraits in charcoal. She loved to travel and could be described as something of a wanderlust, whether while hiking, roller-blading or simply getting in the car and going wherever the road would take her. Cherie's gentle spirit found respite with a good book, curled up in a easy chair with her favorite blanket and her kitties,Timothy and Amelia.

A retired Air Force Colonel, Command Pilot, Budget and Procurement expert passed away after a brief battle with Cancer on September 6, 2010 in the Mt Vernon area of Fairfax County, where he had resided for 48 years.


Colonel White, a native of Valparaiso, Indiana was retired from the Air Force Headquarters at the Pentagon in 1975 after 31 years active service. He attended Valparaiso University from 1935 to 1936. After working for Carnegie Steel Corp and McGill Manufacturing Company from 1936 to 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and won his Pilot wings the following year. During World War II Col White flew Troop Carrier missions in C-46 and C-47 aircraft from Port Moresby, New Guinea to Northern Luzon in the Philippines via Moratai in Dutch East Indies. He flew 291 Combat Missions, participated in 7 Combat Battles, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Col White was a rated Command Pilot with over 4600 flying hours.


After the war, he returned to Indiana and McGill Manufacturers for a brief period, but was recalled to active duty in 1948. He held various key

During his career he was awarded the Air Force Legion of Merit Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Com- mendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Prior to retirement, Colonel White served four years as Staff Director of the Defense Procurement Management Review Board. He was a member of the National Contract Management Association and a Certified Professional Contract Manager.


He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha and completed his graduate work at George Washington University. He was a graduate of the Air Tactical School, USAF Supply Officers Course, Budget & Fiscal Officers Course, Comptroller Staff Officers Course, and the Industri- al College of the Armed Forces.


Colonel White was a life member of a number of organizations and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church since 1971 and participated in church, community, school and Boy Scout activities.


He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan White of Mt. Vernon; four children, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Terry L. White and his wife Gail of Omaha, Nebraska; Cathy W. Trapnell of New Bern, North Carolina; Mark A. White and his wife Diane of Falmouth, Virginia; and David J. White of Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Llynn K. White Coyne and her husband, Ken; Michael Magarelli; Nicole White; Mathew Trapnell and Alex Trapnell; and two great-grandchildren, Ash Magarelli and Adler Trapnell.


Funeral services will be held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. Interment with full military honors will follow at Arlington National Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Fort Myer Officers Club.
