APAA COMES TO THAILAND JURISDICTION REPORT: THAILAND

Te Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) has selected Tailand to host its annual meeting in Chiang Mai in October 2012.
Te APAA currently has around 2,300 members—IP practitioners from Asia and Australasia. Headquartered in Japan, the APAA operates through 10 committees and interest groups: the executive advisory committee, the anti-counterfeiting committee, the copyright committee, the designs committee, the emerging IP rights committee, the patents committee, the trademarks committee, the ad-hoc committee, the website group and the workshop group. Its Council Members are selected every three years. It holds a council meeting at least once a year and a general assembly every three years.
Members of the APAA Tailand Group have formed an organising committee for the meeting. Te committee has appointed working groups to handle different functions of the meeting and has selected a professional conference organiser. Te organising committee plans to limit attendee numbers to around 1,200.
Te meeting will last for five days. First-day highlights include the opening ceremony and an evening reception where members, observers, accompanying family persons, accompanying office personnel and guests will enjoy Tai food and cultural performances. Te second night will be a cultural night where participants will enjoy a variety of Tai cultural shows and performances as well as a networking opportunity. Te third day will see attendees divided into groups, depending on their choices, to do different full-day excursion activities at different locations, including golfing, biking, elephant riding, visiting cultural sites and handicraſt centres. Te General Assembly will take place on day four, as well as more committee meetings and workshops. Te day will end with a farewell gala dinner where the participants will enjoy superb local food and beverages while watching and participating in a series of cultural performances. A meeting of the newly elected Council Members of the APAA will take place on day five.
For those who have never been to Chiang Mai, it is the second-largest city in Tailand. It is a major hub of tourism, transportation, education and cross-border trade. Te Travel & Leisure Magazine found in a recent survey that Chiang Mai is the second most popular destination worldwide for travellers in 2010 aſter Bangkok. Te weather in Chiang Mai around the end of October will be nice and cool. Te participants can explore the night markets and the night spots of the city aſter the meeting during the day. To avoid disappointment, register as soon as possible.
