Liverpool is located at the mouth of the Mersey River. It was once the home port of some of North America’s most successful privateers. A ‘privateer’ was essentially, a government-
sanctioned pirate who captured enemy ships and brought them back to port. This trade was practiced from 1760 through the War of 1812, and during the American Revolution the town was attacked in reprisal.
