Simple parting plane and feature orientations meant simple and less expensive tooling. • All the posts and ribs of the cast assembly were designed to be drawn away from the permanent mold tooling, eliminating the core pins and slides, which add cost and contribute to part-to-part dimensional variations.

• A minimum casting wall thickness of 0.08 in. is possible with diecasting.

The casting process’ surface fi nish allowed the application of an enhanced cosmetic coating. • Through careful selection of the casting process, alloy and tooling, optimum sur- face fi nish can be achieved. Permanent mold, gravity and graphite diecasting offer superior surface fi nish, tighter dimensional tolerances and reproducibility over con- ventional sand casting processes.

Features were designed according to the limitations of the casting process vs. machining. • For the handheld translator, the gasket groove area was designed to be machined (as opposed to as-cast) due to the assembly’s tight tolerance requirements and desired water tightness. METAL
