Pace Industries Acquires Del Mar Zinc Business Pace Industries, Fayetteville, Ark.,

has acquired Del Mar Industries Inc.’s zinc diecasting business, which was part of the company’s Del Mar Die Casting Business in Gardena, Calif. The acquisition is effective immediately. “Now more than ever, companies

are looking for ways to efficiently grow business,” said Scott Bull, CEO, Pace Industries, in a press release. “This acquisition not only helps us achieve that goal but strengthens our position and expands our capabilities in the zinc die casting sector.” The Del Mar zinc die casting busi-

ness joins Pace Industries’ other zinc die casting operations in St. Paul, Minn., North Billerica, Mass., and Harrison, Ark. The transaction allows Del Mar In- dustries to channel all of its resources

into its magnesium and aluminum operations. Del Mar will assist its zinc customer base through the transition. “We view this as a positive move

for each of our companies,” said Doug Taylor, president and chief executive officer of Del Mar Industries, in the press release. Pace Industries, formerly known

as Leggett & Platt Aluminum Group, houses 14 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Mexico, including nine diecasting divisions, three tool and die shops and two finishing and painting facilities, and employs more than 2,700. Del Mar Industries provides alu-

minum die castings through its Los Angeles Die Casting Business and zinc and magnesium die castings through its Del Mar Die Casting Business. METAL

Cifunsa to Make New CGI Blocks for Navistar Navistar International Corp.,

Warrenville, Ill., has contracted met- alcaster Cifunsa, Saltillo, Mexico, to produce compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine cylinder blocks for its new MaxxForce 7 diesel engines. Cifunsa began production on the

CGI blocks for the 6.4 litre V8 diesel en- gine in January. The company has been working with CGI since 1993, when it began employing SinterCast process control technology, but the Navistar MaxxForce 7 is the metalcaster’s first CGI casting to begin mass production. The CGI block reportedly resulted

in a weight reduction over Navistar’s previous generation 6.4 liter V8 engine without sacrificing strength and stiffness (see Casting Innova- tions, page 56, for more).

May/June 2010

“Navistar’s decision to specify CGI

for the MaxxForce 7 cylinder block reinforces the trend toward CGI for the next generation of high performance and environmentally efficient engines,” said Alberto Piñones, Cifunsa’s chief executive officer. “We have seen a con- tinuous increase in the demand for new CGI engine programs, and we regard CGI as one of Cifunsa’s main growth areas in the near future.” Cifunsa is a member of the Grupo Industrial Saltillo. It maintains four casting facilities and has an installed ca- pacity of 475,000 metric tons per year. The company supplies iron castings to North American OEMs like Caterpillar, Chrysler, Detroit Diesel, Ford, General Motors, John Deere, Navistar, Nissan and Volkswagen.
