Cast-In Coil for Temperature Control Part Reduces Lead Time, Cost

Cast Component: Cooling jacket. Material: A356 aluminum. Process: Permanent mold.

Casting Supplier: L A Aluminum Casting Co., Hayden, Idaho.

Customer: Raytek, Santa Cruz, Calif.

• The jacket cools the circuits of a non-con- tact infrared temperature control instrument by running water through a cast-in coil.

• The customer had been using three dif- ferent companies to manufacture the part, one to make the coil, another to produce the casting and a third to machine it. L A Aluminum provided a complete part at 50% of the original price. The lead time was reduced from 12 to four weeks.

• The metalcaster cast the coil into the part using slides to locate the coil.
