Decorated Casting Wins Automotive News PACE Award
A magnesium casting by Meridian Lightweight Technologies Inc., Strath- roy, Ontario, Canada, has been hon- ored with one of this year’s Automotive News PACE awards. The casting, which previously won
awards from both the American Found- ry Society and the North American Die Casting Association, received the award in the “Product” category for exhibiting superior innovation, technological ad-
vancement and business performance, according to the contest judges’ panel. The 17.6-lb. casting, now in produc-
tion for the Lincoln MKT, is the largest diecast magnesium closure panel used in the world. It offered the customer more than 20% weight savings while functioning as the primary structural load bearing component in the lift- gate assembly. The one-piece casting replaced a six-piece steel weldment.
The 2010 Automotive News PACE
Awards were presented on April 12 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. In addition to Meridian, nine companies received awards in the “Product” category. Automotive News also gave awards in three other categories: “Manufacturing Process and Capital Equipment,” “Informa- tion Technology and Services,” and “Innovation Partnership.”
METAL Specialty Caster Molded Magnesium Adds Capabilities Molded Magnesium Products LLC
(MMP), Jackson, Mich., announced it has added CNC machining, metal fin- ishing, powder coating, prototyping, and engineering and design services to its specialty casting capabilities. MMP was formed as a joint venture
between diecaster Mag-Tec Casting Corp., Jackson, Mich., and Thixomat
Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich., the developer of the Thixomolding injection molding process. The Thixomolding process is used to produce castings with elevated material properties. MMP uses the process to cast components for the electronics, sporting goods, defense and automotive markets. “We’re now providing a full-service
capability to meet the global demand for high-precision engineering com- ponents as a replacement for plastics, die castings and parts machined from tool plate,” said Bill Wilson, general manager of MMP. MMP’s manufacturing operation in-
cludes a 245-ton, 310-ton and 720-ton Thixomolding machine.
