When it comes to living a long, healthy life, what’s far more important than your genes is how you choose to live that life. In fact, a recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that avoiding unhealthy habits like drinking, smoking, inactivity and a poor diet can tack 12 years onto your lifespan. Of course, being the person with the most years under his or her belt isn’t really the goal. It’s being healthy enough to make the most out of every year you’ve got, or living your best life—at any age. Here’s how to maintain optimal health every step of the way. According to the U.S. Dept. of Health
and Human Services, the most important things you can do to stay vital and youthful are: 1 Get all of your recommended health screenings, 2 Don’t smoke, 3 Be physically active, 4 Eat a healthy diet, 5 Stay a healthy weight and 6 Take your medication, if prescribed by your physician. The advice sounds clear cut enough, until
you try to adopt it. Some recommendations, like how much sleep or physical activity you need, don’t change as you age. They’re the same, whether you’re 20 or 70. But others, like what tests you need, do depend on how many candles sit atop your birthday cake. Here’s what it all means for you.
