Peter Collins FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICER


Peter Collins, 72, a Foreign


Service officer from 1963 until his retirement in 1994, died July 17 of a cardiac embolism at his home in Albuquerque. Mr. Collins had been a delegate


to the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 to end the Vietnam War and was a specialist on Greece-U.S. rela- tions. From 1983 to 1984, he was a senior fellow at the Hoover Insti- tution at Stanford University. He was fluent in French, Greek, Viet- namese and Portuguese. Mr. Collins was born in South


Bend, Ind., and was a 1959 gradu- ate of Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. After serving in the Army from 1961 to 1963, he moved to Washington. He re- ceived a master’s degree in educa- tion from George Washington University in 1993. He lived in Bethesda from 1977 until 1994, when he relocated to Albuquerque, where he was a consultant at Sandia National Laboratories. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Gloria Mack Collins of Al- buquerque; a stepmother, Emily Collins of Blacksburg, Va.; a sis- ter; and a brother.

Leonard A. Shapiro REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER


Leonard A. Shapiro, 67, who led real estate development and investment firms in the Washing- ton area, died Aug. 1 of renal fail- ure at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He had homes in the District and Naples, Fla. Mr. Shapiro began his business career in the 1970s, operating NewLife Group with Allan J. Ber- man, with whom he de- veloped other companies. The firm de- veloped prop- erties in Maryland and Virginia.

rector of Emerald Realty Advi- sors and chairman of W&B In- vestors, a real estate and invest- ment firm. Leonard Alan Shapiro was born in Philadelphia and gradu- ated from the University of Penn- sylvania’s Wharton School in 1964. He graduated from George- town University law school in 1967 and practiced law for several years before entering business. Mr. Shapiro lived in McLean for 35 years and was vice presi- dent of the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association. He was a member of Penn’s board of trustees and was a past presi- dent of its alumni society. He was vice president of Washington He- brew Congregation, a reform syn- agogue. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Woodmont Coun- try Club in Rockville. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Leslie Cohen Shapiro of Washington and Naples; two chil- dren, Alexandra Cudby of Cabin John and Theodore Shapiro of Los Angeles; his mother, Ruth Shapiro of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister; and four grandchildren. — Matt Schudel


Miriam H. Crocker CHURCH MEMBER


Miriam Crocker, 97, who had been a member for more than 50 years of Christ Church in George- town, where she also served on the vestry, died Aug. 11 at her home in Washington. She had cancer. From 1947 to 1972, Mrs. Crock- er owned and operated a shop and design studio on Wisconsin Avenue that sold intricately deco- rated lamps. Her clients included the Kennedy White House and many embassies. Mabel Miriam Hedges was born in Scranton, Ark., and moved to the Washington area in 1945.


She was a member of the Sul-


grave Club and the Georgetown Citizens Association, where she helped improve parks and play- grounds in the neighborhood. She was also a member of the board of governors for St. Albans School and a member of the building committee for the Wash- ington National Cathedral. Her husband of 34 years,

Richard J. Green SCIENTIST


Richard J. Green, 82, a director for the National Science Founda- tion and a program manager for NASA’s Apollo program during the late 1960s, died Aug. 4 at his home in Washington. He had lung cancer. Mr. Green worked for the Na- tional Science Foundation from 1970 until 1996, when he became a private consultant. From 1979 to 1981 he was the


associate director for mitigation and research at the Federal Emer- gency Management Agency. Dur- ing the early 1990s, he taught at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Wyoming. Richard James Green, a native


of Newark, received a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1949 from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and a master’s degree in physics in 1955 from Fordham University in New York City. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and was a member of the National Guard from 1957 to 1962. He was a member of the Cos-


mos Club and St. Aloysius Catho- lic Church in Washington. He was a volunteer for the Washington Jesuit Academy. He received the National Sci- ence Foundation’s Meritorious Service Award and NASA’s Excep- tional Scientific Achievement Medal. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patricia Higgins Green of Washington; four children, John Green of Austin, Alice E. Green of New York City, Richard J. Green of Washington and Patricia T. Christian M. Lavie, 72, a chef at


the French Embassy in Washing- ton from the mid-1990s until the early 2000s, died Aug. 10 at his home in Arlington County. He had gastric cancer. Mr. Lavie was a chef in the ex-


ecutive kitchen at the National Geographic Society from 1984 to 1995. Christian Marcel Lavie was born in Avignon, France, and served in the French military dur- ing the late 1950s. Before moving to the Washing- ton area in 1984, he traveled around Canada and the United States and had opened a French restaurant, Mon Paris, in San Francisco. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Lilian Calixto Lavie of Ar- lington; two children, Monique Lavie of New York City and Jean Marie Lavie of Paris; and a sister. — Lauren Wiseman

Cleatus Barnett, a long-time director of WMATA, died on August 11, 2010, in Pen- sacola, Florida. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 33 East Gregory St., Pensacola, at 4 p.m., on August 15, 2010. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at Waters & Hibbert, 124 West Gregory St., Pensacola, FL. Col Burke will be interred with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery on November 15, 2010 following an 8:45 a.m. funeral Mass at The Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer.

Barschdorf, a 1938 graduate of the United States Military Academy served our nation during WWII in North Africa and Italy taking part in the initial landings at Salerno and subsequent battles at Cassino and Anzio. Fol- lowing WWII he obtained a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at MIT. After military retire- ment, he served as Port Director of the Mis- sissippi River Port of Greenville. He authored many articles, editorials, and an authoritative book on inland waterway port management and history. Interment, with Full Military Hon- ors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 1 p.m. on August 18, 2010.
