More change and growth

for TMBC The Mountain Boot Company has made a number of significant internal changes as well as new appointments following more recent growth. The company now comprises nine premium brands in its ever-explanding portfolio with Lorpen technical socks the latest addition. Glyn Padget, who has been with the company for 12 years, is promoted to the role of Core Outdoor Division – Sales Director.

Andy Babbage is promoted to Category Sales Manager for the Multisport Division, and is to be underpinned by the creation of a new role – multisport sales representative (south). Jake Wiid formally of Osprey Europe joins the company with immediate effect. These developments follow on from the earlier appointment in the year of Simon Turner to the position of Multisport Northern area Sales Manager.

MBC is also looking to support both growth and opportunity, with the newly-created position of PR and Marketing Manager.

Commenting on the position, Steve Roberts of MBC said: “This is a natural progression for the business and we have now reached the tipping point, where it makes sense to bolster our internal resource in this key area. We need this additional resource to ensure the highest level of support across a variety of crucial aspects of the marketing mix.” As a result of this new role, MBC will be restructuring its working relationship with Real PR from October.

Roberts added: “Real PR have been an integral part of the company’s success over many years. We will continue to work with Real on selected ongoing and future projects, including the launch of the Scarpa lifestyle range. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Real PR for their previous and continued contribution to the business.

TNF celebrates

OutDoor awards trio The North Face recently received three coveted OutDoor Industry Awards at the OutDoor event in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The North Face garnered honours in the Apparel/Helmet/Shoes category for three products in its Spring 2011 line-up, including two jackets and a shoe. Designed for expeditions when all climbers have is what they can carry in their daypacks, the wind and water-resistant Men’s & Women’s Verto Jacket is new for Spring 2011 and specifically created for emergency situations. The Verto is made from seven- denier Pertex Quantum nylon micro-ripstop – the lightest fabric ever used in The North Face Summit Series – and packs down to the size of an energy bar. Remarkably lightweight (Men 78g and Women 68g) and compressible, the Verto stuffs into its own zippered pocket (on the chest for men and the bicep for women) and features a handy webbing loop, making it easy to clip the packed jacket to a climbing harness. Another winner was the new Men’s & Women’s Hydroshock SE, an adventure travel shoe. The Hydroshock offers a

injection-moulded EVA construction – in the shoe’s protective cage, punched with holes for drainage and airflow, and in its midsole/outsole, dotted with rubber pods for increased traction. The Hydroshock is faced with a quick drying, breathable mesh and water-friendly synthetic suede upper and an easy quick-pull lace lock system. Finally, the new Men’s Triumph Anorak signals a breakthrough in increasing compressibility in an ultralight, waterproof shell. The Triumph boasts an ingenious construction using only two panels of waterproof, breathable HyVent performance fabric. Comparable jackets use more than 15 separate fabric panels, resulting in bulk from excessive stitching and seam tape. The Triumph uses super skinny seam tape and reduces the number of seams to the bare minimum to create a waterproof, breathable jacket weighing an average of just 159g.

Berghaus to open in Bristol

Berghaus has confirmed that it will open a store in Bristol this year. The 1,800 sq ft ground floor shop will be located on a site in Bristol city centre and will be trading by the end of September. Berghaus opened its first store in the MetroCentre in 2007, followed by the flagship Covent Garden store in 2008 and a store on Dean Street in Manchester last year, in partnership with Nevisport. The stores have also allowed the company to test market new merchandising techniques, improving sales and Berghaus’ understanding of its consumers. This in turn has influenced range development each season and allowed the company to develop collections and support materials that are more effective and assist customers with their own sell through.

Richard Cotter, Berghaus brand president, said: “Our own retail strategy is responding to consumer demand. In today’s multi-media society, people have a broader awareness of the extent of the Berghaus collection. Currently, even our biggest customers only stock a relatively small selection of the full range and consumers contact Berghaus in increasing numbers, requesting products that are hard to find.”
