OutDoor Review CAMP

CAMP were another company celebrating an award, with an OutDoor Industry Award under their belt for the CAMP Matrix Gyro, a three- point swivel system which helps climbers avoid the twisting of ropes and webbing, enabling safe and simple progression during via ferrata and adventure park sessions. They were also exhibiting new carabiners, climbing harnesses, CAMPacks and a lovely-looking Minima double wall tunnel tent, with a total weight of just 0.96kg.

Merrell are pushing on into the world of barefoot footwear, oxymoronic as that sounds; the Merrell Barefoot range looks brilliant, with really easy on the eye trail shoes and more. The line has come from a collaboration with Vibram, who of course manufacture the iconic FiveFingers barefoot shoe. The

range actually comprises six

shoes, including the Trail Glove, True Glove, Tough Glove, Pace Glove, Power Glove and Pure Glove. Trail Glove and True Glove are multi- terrain options, while Tough Glove is a soft leather style for gadding about town. Pace, Power and Pure are the solutions for barefoot ladies, the most striking being PowerGlove with its three Velcro closures.

The Refuge Pro [pictured] also looks like a winner, with a molded nylon arch shank, and double density shock pods in the heel, and a Vibram sole. It comes in a GORE-TEX waterproof style, or without. There’s a lot more to talk about with Merrell, but we don’t have space here – you’ll have to wait for a future issue!

We’re big fans of Vango at SGB Outdoor, and the 2011 range at Friedrichshafen doesn’t disappoint. The Vango tents were in a separate area from the rucsacs, furniture and accessories. The standout for us is the AirBeam range, where the tent uses inflatable tubes instead of poles, so they’re much lighter and apparently easy to pitch. This innovative new collection has been designed in an attractive colourway and has two styles, each in three different sizes for couples, families or groups. And the tents are packed with features such as a double entrance, large porches, big storage areas, internal pockets and flexible bedroom configurations. Vango’s Family Premium range has been rebranded the Singature range for 2011, and the range has been updated accordingly. Also of note is the Planet sleeping bag, which features a mosquito net and HealthGuard Anti Mosquito Finish to repel insects and HealthGuard Antibacterial Finish to prevent dust mites, odour and bacteria.
