FROM THE EDITOR Show Time
I
nstead of bronzing myself on a foreign beach this summer, I will be spending August out of the sun’s rays at the shoe shows in London and Birmingham, namely Pure and Moda. My sun deprivation will probably not result in my falling victim to rickets but I just want you
to appreciate that I am sacrificing my tan to the greater good of the shoe industry to bring you the latest fashion trends. As well as sneak previews of MODA and PURE, in this issue we also
talk to Helen Povey, Senior Branded Footwear Buyer at the Office retail chain. Helen voted Footwear Buyer Of The Year (Drapers Awards 2010), tells us her criteria for selecting footwear and which fashion shows she attends, in the first of a new series of Buyer’s Profiles. Next month we talk to Nicola Jacobs, Footwear Buying Manager, Debenhams. Also, in this edition, our exciting new Fashion Trends section,
produced in association with leading fashion trend analysis company
Trendstop.com, brings you a taste of Spring/Summer 2011. As the popularity of men’s sandals continues to grow, designers seek alternative sources of inspiration. Accents of the erstwhile male staple, sportswear continue to infiltrate footwear, imbuing the conventional gladiator style with new references. The juxtaposition is not so unusual, as gladiatorial games and combat are regularly recognized as symbols of Roman virility and athleticism, the armed combatant’s popular entertainers in the Roman republic! Whilst, gleaning insight into what’s likely to be flying off your
shelves next summer, you might care to check out our Editor’s Choice page. We have selected a bevy of beautiful sandals from Europe’s top manufacturers and those from further afield, for your lady customers in SS11. Footwear Today’s budget did not stretch to flying our intrepid
footwear reporter Henry Harington to the natural habitat of the Meindl boot, the Bavarian Alps, to road test a pair of Burma Pro hiking boots. So instead of cavorting across the Alpine meadows to a background of surging music and singing…. “The hills are alive with the sound of music”, Henry road tested the boots on Dartmoor. Anyway, he maintains that walking boots look naf if one is wearing a nun’s habit! Popular with footwear and fashion buyers, the three-day
Kensington Shoe Event has become a premier show for medium-to- high quality footwear, but it still remains deliciously compact and customer-friendly. Just a reminder, the Event has moved location and dates for this season, due to the refurbishment taking place at The Kensington Close Hotel. It will now be at The Westbury Mayfair, Conduit Street, W1 from September 26th to 28th. All the usual exhibitors will be taking part so the organisers look forward to receiving their visitors in this new temporary home. Do come along and meet the Footwear Today team at Moda, NEC
Birmingham, from August 8-10 2010. Look out for Stand No U26. Enjoy the summer sunshine while it lasts!
Kind regards, Cheryl
