Futuristic footwear & Multi-strap gladiator

Multi-strap gladiator As the popularity of men’s sandals continues to grow, designers seek alternative sources of inspiration. Accents of the erstwhile male staple, sportswear continue to infiltrate footwear, imbuing the conventional gladiator style with new references. The juxtaposition is not so unusual, as gladiatorial games and combat are regularly recognized as symbols of Roman virility and athleticism, the armed combatant’s popular entertainers in the Roman republic.

On the catwalk, designers including Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin and Hugo Boss included sandals that take considerable influence from this narrative.

Simple styles are executed in soft, raw leathers, multiple straps fastening the design around the ankle, twisted and plaited leathers the only decorative adornment. Byblos added a leg guard, extending from ankle to knee, in a literal update of protective gladiatorial attire.

In an evolution of the trend, other designers shunned color, opting for an all enveloping palette of blinding white. Borrowing for contemporary sports apparel, where pure white trainers are valued above all else, these sandals collide tradition with the urban athlete. Velcro fastenings, wide ankle cuffs and lace-up detailing inform designers including Givenchy and Kris Van Assche.

Similarly, Giuliano Fujiwara’s black snap fastenings create a dramatic strap effect, laid over soft suede edged with black piping, concluded with a soft sole and piping.

Lace-up multi strap A lace-up detailing is complemented by a wide ankle cuff that is held in place by a lighter colored buckle. The use of a limited color palette ensures the style retains simplicity.

Leather ankle cuff sandal Wide straps extend from a central band that extends to the ankle. Executed in raw navy leather the sandal retains simplicity, yet the style is practical and covers most of the foot.

Three strap sandal The three strap sandal nods to subtle sportswear inspiration, with a white sole and stitched detailing. A Gray canvas upper is attached by three straps, which cover the top of the foot, culminating in a easy-wear everyday style.

Trainer sandals An understated design, these flats are perfect for the season. Team with graphic prints and tailored shorts for a casual summer style. A slightly thicker sole makes the design feel more substantial, as the foot is elevated off the floor.

Sport sandal hybrid The sportswear influence is evident through the color palette – gray, white and blue – and the Velcro ankle cuff fastening. The sole is edged with dark contrast piping, again promoting a sports conceit.

Minimal gladiator Free from cumbersome fastenings, the minimal gladiator encases the foot in a simple fashion. The navy coloration extends to the sole which further emphasizing the conceit.
