RETAILBIZ: IN THE MIX: FEATURING ARMIN VAN BUUREN MCV 16/07/10 33

In The Mix: Featuring Armin van Buuren is a Wii DJ music game with a twist…

by Dominic Sacco

FOR THOSE unfamiliar with the world of dance music, Armin van Buuren is one of the world’s top DJs. He has been named No.1 in DJ Magazine’s prestigious annual list of the top 100 DJs for the past three years.

On top of this, van Buuren claims to pull in over ten million listeners a week on ‘A State of Trance’, a radio show broadcasting across 40 FM stations as well as satellite and internet radio. He has also received various accolades including Best Album for his record Shivers at the Dutch Release Dance Awards. In March van Buuren was awarded the Gouden Harp, the highest distinction a Dutch artist can get. So what does this have to do with the video games industry? Publisher, Foreign Media Games has seen the potential in van Buuren’s music and global following, and is releasing In The Mix: Featuring Armin van Buuren on Wii – a DJ title with a range of unique features. “Previous sales figures show that there is a large group of people who like to play music games,” says Foreign Media Games’ MD Michel van Elmpt. “So for retail, this game offers a unique opportunity to offer something completely new to the large fanbase for music games. It also offers a unique gameplay experience to all those who like dance music, which is a genre that’s really quite under-supported in the music game sector.” In The Mix’s single-player career mode puts gamers on the path of becoming the ultimate DJ, starting out in small clubs before heading onto the larger festival circuit and bigger clubs in other countries. There are 30 venues in 15

cities available to perform at and players can earn money to buy new equipment. Alternatively, the game’s party mode allows the user to perform as a DJ with

special remixes made especially for the video game.

“No other dance music game currently on the market comes close to either the calibre of the licence or the translation of the DJ’s craft into a game template,” adds van Elmpt. “In The Mix is the first title

for Wii to recreate the pro DJ lifestyle, from live mixing for

audiences to producing unique, standalone tracks for use in the clubs.” There’s also a studio mode enabling players to create their own unique

records. Users start off with a basic drum track and add vocals, synthesisers and effects to make a complex track with all the elements of a hit dance song. In The Mix: Featuring Armin van

Buuren hits shelves in autumn and is available on the Wii.
