LESSON 10: INSTANT LOCKS
Ever dreamt of Rapunzel-like hair, those cascading tresses that seem to be the sole property of tower-trapped princesses?…
Sure, you could grow your own and it may take years. Or you can choose to go to a salon to get and an instant transformation yet still end up with sad, scraggy ends if your choice of salon is the wrong one. Tatiana Karelina, Creator of Tatiana Hair Extensions with salons in London and now Manchester, has brought us tips and advice on what to look for when considering hair extensions.
CHOOSING THE SALON Apart from the obvious things that need to be taken into consideration, like quality of hair used, experience of the hair technicians and hair attachment methodology, there are subtle observable factors that can assessed at the consultation stage to help make the decision easier. Look for things like cleanliness, inventory of hair, approach to pricing, customer service and VIP experience. So why does this matter? Very simply, a salon that goes out of the way to enhance the whole experience is a salon that takes pride in what they do.
QUALITY OF HAIR Cheap synthetic or processed hair should be avoided by all means. This hair normally comes in packets feeling coarse and looking unnaturally shiny. The shiny silicone coating goes after a few washes leaving those processed hair extensions looking very dull and brittle. This hair mats and breaks easily and doesn’t last which becomes a waste of money.
As hair extensions have gained in popularity so too has the number of hair extension “experts”. Many of those don’t have enough training and experience to attach the hair correctly. They may use older methods that cause terrible damage to your hair, or cheap processed hair that doesn’t look natural and quickly begins to show wear.
The finest unprocessed (preferably virgin uncolored hair) will cost more but will look 100% natural with beautiful bounce and volume. It will feel soft and stay looking like that for months which allows you to reuse this hair a few times.
AVOIDING AN UNATURAL LOOK In order to avoid hair extensions that stand out and scream, “I am wearing extensions!” it is also important to match the texture of extensions to ones natural hair. It goes without saying that if you have straight hair that you shouldn’t add curly extensions and vice versa.
Equally important is the positioning of hair extensions. Poorly positioned extensions can also contribute to fake looking result. Attachments should not be positioned too close to the hairline or to the crown.
ELIMINATING THE RISK OF DAMAGE Even if you have chosen the best quality hair, it still won’t look good if the quality of the attachments are poor. There is nothing worse than extensions added using glue and being able to see the adhesive, which can also cause damage. Unlike any glued methods, Micro Rings cause no damage to your own hair, which means you can continue to grow your hair whilst wearing your extensions.
Many who have had glue used on their hair have suffered considerable hair loss and breakage, particularly during removal of the glue bonds. Micro rings are clean and quick to apply and remove, and when properly applied, are far less bulky and noticeable than glue bonds.
