The state of your office says it all, but what it’s like when your office is mostly a van and you spend your days selling local, seasonal organic veg to the good folk of Greater Manchester? We met up with Dave Hanlon of Riverford Organic in Manchester to go back to the office.
THE JOB
Dave Hanlon runs a Riverford Organic franchise delivering great tasting, good value, seasonal and organic vegetables (mostly from Stockley Farm in Cheshire) as well as a range of other organic items including fruit, meat and wine to customers across Manchester and parts of Cheshire. Dave spent much of his working life with Majestic working his way up to senior management in London before moving back up North and starting his own business with Riverford Organic two years ago.
WE ASK
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Dave began delivering Riverford Organic vegboxes to customers in Stockport, Macclesfield and South Manchester in 2008 before extending coverage to encompass a wider area including Marple, New Mills and Disley. Earlier this year he launched deliveries into Manchester City Centre ensuring that customers across much of Greater Manchester and Salford can now enjoy home deliveries of quality, local, seasonal vegetables.
What’s the best thing about working in Manchester? The people and the dynamic changes to the city centre since I first lived in Manchester in the early 90’s. What’s the favourite part of your job? Customer service is critical to my business and I get real satisfaction and enjoyment in developing lasting customer relationships. This is why I still deliver two days a week. Being known as the ‘veggie man’ to Manchester pre-schoolers always raises a smile.
And the worst part of your job? Making time to do the admin and accounts. What’s the state of your desk? I have two offices - one at home and one in the van - they could pass for an experiment in chaos theory.
What do you do for lunch? Is it eat out? Or do you pack-lunch? I bring a sandwich or buy one and try and stop somewhere interesting - my favourite is in the hills above Bollington looking right across the Cheshire Plain. Are you part of the twitterati? No, but I should be - watch this space. What’s your guilty pleasure? Great cheese and fine wine - the latter reduces the health implications of the former or so I believe. How do you relax (after work)? I used to play a lot of sport but with two under 7’s if I can kick or hit a ball round the garden it’s a great way to unwind.
