Student product designer’s car crash led to final year project

Breakingyour spine after being involved in a serious car crash would be enough to put the brakes on any student’s graduation prospects, but one product designer at gray's school ofart, part of robert gordon university, has simply used the rehabilitation experience to drive her final year project. Now focused on helping others

deal with trauma, this inspirational student and her classmates are proving that the product of a degree at Robert Gordon University is about more than just making the grade. IslaMarie Turnbull, 21, was

caught up in a road collision that left her with a broken back and nerve damage last July. She spent ten weeks in hospital learning to walk and fought hard to persuade those around her that she was fit to

continue with her studies. Since then, she has been determined to turn her story into a positive one, working with medical experts and using her new found knowledge to redesign the medical back brace. IslaMarie is concerned with the

emotional trauma of rehabilitation and is now working closely with theAberdeen Centre for Trauma Research, which is based at Robert Gordon University, to better understand the psychological impact on patients. Having been invited to speak at the TraumaCare conference in Telford, she is now to see her work published in professional journal, ‘TRAUMA’, as a result. The former Inverkeithing High

School pupil says: “I have loved my time at university, and the opportunity to cover a wide range of disciplines through studying

product design has been really encouraging. This year, I have combined interests in everything from medicine to fashion and textiles, and I would love to pursue my current area of research after university.

“I feel that my knowledge of

design and marketing combined gives me a unique perspective in addressing attitudes and improving a patient's quality of life.”
