Student Exhibition Supplement Britain’s got talent when it
comes to innovation and design
SimOn COwell has shown when it comes to showbiz, ‘Britain’s got talent’. Certainly, when it comes to innovation and design, Britain’s got talent in a big way as the current wave of graduating students’ exhibitions show. Britain has always been at the
forefront of scientific and technical progress with its world beating scientists and excellent
technicians. However, what has always been lacking in the UK is first-class marketing and banks with the foresight to back British manufacturing. If Britain is to battle its way
back to financial health it must create a demand for British products, because they are innovative and well designed. These products must be offered to the world by first-class

marketers and sales professionals who have more than English, talking with potential customers in their own language. It is right for the coalition to

coalition, in creating technical academies, finishes up with technical education as a second-class degree which is why the people currently running the country have humanities degrees. To compete in the modern world we need teams of first-class scientists, technicians, product designers, marketers and sales professionals. If you ask the Chinese why they
are sitting on a trillion dollar surplus, they must surely answer, because we are the workshop of the world. We must get back to profitably making the things the world wants and needs. Many advertisers in Technology
in Education are supplying machines to train students in the art of making things. These are NOT the oily, dirty, lumbering mechanical monsters of the Victorian area but clean, computer controlled 21st century equipment which takes the grind out of manufacturing. Now, also, the time taken to go
from design to solid prototype has been considerably shortened thanks to modern developments such as 3D printing, which is currently being used by students in UK classrooms.
On the following editorial
pages, Technology in Education looks at a few students’ exhibitions where graduates show theirmettle.
