SPACE REMOVES ASBESTOS TO CREATE NEW CATERING AND FOOD TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES

When Central technology College in Gloucester was awarded funds to create new kitchen facilities to serve both diploma and vocational qualifications in catering they chose to work with local company Space Catering. Two years ago the college didn’t

have any catering facilities, but since their food technology teaching area was installed they were keen to continue to invest in their students’ education and

applied for funding to create a kitchen that would enable them to offer different skills and vocations from the curriculum. The plan was put into action by

JulianMorgan, deputy head of the college, who worked with his team to make sure the plans created would work for them. “Getting the team involved who will actually use the facility every day and teach our students in the newsurroundings was paramount,” explains Julian. “They understood how to make the plans work for them so they can deliver their lessons more fluidly, ensuring that each lesson is used to its maximum potential rather than time being wasted through lack of planning at the initial stages.” Julian Hale, project manager for

Space Catering Equipment continues the story. “We were tasked with something different from the norm with this installation. From the dismantling of the room and removal of asbestos from the existing building to re-wiring, creating new routes for incoming gas, water and waste together with full decoration of the newly created facility – you name it, we did it.

“The suite installed was ranged

around a central island configuration with room for sixteen pupils, giving the teaching team a clear view of all the students at all times. There are eight Salamander grills and eight four-burner gas cookers with two students sharing the equipment at any one time. The new work space has given the college teaching facilities that will enable the students to work on professional grade equipment that they would

see in many working commercial kitchens – giving them a great taste of life as a chef.” JulianMorgan comments: “It’s

amazing to see how quickly this transformation has taken place, and how the process was managed seamlessly by the team at Space. Within thirty days we had a new state-of-the-art teaching facility that a few months ago seemed impossible to visualise.”
