Bruneluniversity’s graduating students put on a very sophisticated exhibition of their work every year at the Design Centre in london. this year was no exception. It is interesting to note how
some of the students get their ideas for innovative designs and products. For instance, it was a blowy
Paris day that inspired Brunel University industrial design student SimonWarne, 27, to create the Brollii, an umbrella that didn’t poke other people in the eyes or bend inside out and break in the wind.
Simon told Technology in
Education: “I originally came up with the idea of Brollii when I was in Paris standing in front of the Musée d’Orsay waiting to go into an art exhibition.While queuing along with another 100 or so people, it started to pour with rain and became very gusty. “I watched as people struggled
to open their umbrellas while being squashed in the crowd, then getting poked in the eyes with flailing umbrella ribs in the windy conditions. I thought to myself, Continued on page26
