M British Cleaning Council Opening lines play in lobbying
By Mark Woodhead, chairman, British Cleaning Council.
In my first column as the new chairman of the British Cleaning Council, I would like to take some time to look back and thank my predecessor Steve Wright for some of his achievements during his tenure, as well as look forward to some of my own highlights coming up in the next two years. The Council has just entered its 28th year, growing with each anniversary, as it has evolved into the highly- regarded and influential 20-strong team operational today. Amongst other things, Steve can be very proud of two major successes during his time - the steady and strategic growth of the British Cleaning Council’s media profile in recent times, and the increased role we now
governmental bodies and departments. Through our media profile, I think we are now viewed as the most authoritative voice of the industry and are taken very seriously by the trade press and beyond. Also, the development of our role as both an advisor and influencer of government will allow us to better represent our members’ needs as we combine our collective influence. Looking forward to the coming months, we have our inaugural conference in the autumn, followed by the Cleaning Show in March 2011. The exciting speaker line-up we have assembled has attracted some very influential members from across the cleaning industry, and I hope this is just the start of many successful
conferences. With tickets disappearing quickly, I suggest you check the BCC’s website soon to ensure that you do not miss out. Meanwhile, the Cleaning Show’s status as the number one industry event is set to continue, as all the major names from our industry gather to show
the very latest
developments in technology and expertise.
Taking over the role in the last week of June, I was able to support some of our members activities as the new chairman elect. CIWM held its Futuresource event at the ExCeL centre in London at the end of June, and alongside the latest technological innovations in sustainable waste
management on display, I was really impressed by the breadth and ambition of the seminars, covering everything from climate change to the new national equal pay agreement. All credit must go to CIWM for this; many of those who attended will have left the conference armed with new knowledge. I am a strong believer in training and seminars such as these, and if our industry is to stay competitive then these events are absolutely essential. I just hope we can match the high standards set by the CIWM during our own conference in the autumn.
Deviating slightly, I would also like to welcome Doug Cooke as the new deputy chairman of the Council,
taking over from your humble narrator in the role. One of Doug’s first duties as deputy chairman elect was to visit the BACHE Conference at Keele University in
Staffordshire. I was unable to attend due to the fact that it was taking place over the same period as CIWM’s Futuresource, but Doug informed me that he found the two day event extremely enlightening. Our educational establishments are probably under more pressure than anyone to achieve the ‘efficiencies’ that are essential in the aftermath of the recession, which has meant that the sector has been at the forefront of developing a more effective, efficient workforce, combined with the background noise of an occasionally hostile union environment. July brings the Building Cleanability Awards Ceremony and the UKHA Annual Ball as the summer gets into full swing, while representatives from the British Cleaning Council are also meeting with LOCOG (the 2012 Games organising committee) once again. I will report back on all of these in next month’s column. Enjoy the read.
